i was looking at these two phones. i didn't buy them because of how long until i would make for the cost of the phone relative to money saved each month.i just bought an eee pc, for an unrelated reason, used off ebay for $135. that's cheaper than this phone, more useful, and can handle public wifi networks where you have to open up a browser and agree.think about it.
I think that is even more likely now. I read a lot of mixed reviews for this and decided to give it a try because I really wanted to get a dedicated Skype phone. I got this one, charged it up and it worked great. I suspected before getting it that the mixed reviews might be due in part to the quality/speed of the internet where the phone was being used. I get 70mbs on a wired connection using a speed test from my office. Went online immediately (open wireless network)and I logged into my Skype account with no problem.
The wireless signal isn't super there but it is typically 3-4 bars on the phone. I use Skype a lot at work, primarily Skypeout and my previous Skype phone (another type) had broken. I get very good sound with mine in my office. I have only had it for a few days but made a number of calls with it and the sound was very good on my end. I have asked some of the people I called and they also said the sound was very good. But our internet speed out of the building is quite fast.
I suspect that is responsible for the call quality.
My only complaint with Net Gear was the techs were not user friendly. The product at first would not stay on line.I called Net Gear they said I needed to talk to my internet provider. I called back my provider and talked to a technician. Rather than call Linksys I went out and bought the latest "N" 1 GB rotor, brought it home set it up and the phone works fantastic. He does use the Net Gear phone now. He said it is not the phone nor is it the provider that it is my rotor.
Also he said I really only needed to call Linksys and have them up date the firm ware but I choose to up grade my rotor.I love the convience, the phone works without having to be on line. My provider said I was good and I was on 8 gb road runner high speed so there should be no problem I called Net Gear back they insisted it was the internet provider. The phone being their product, they should have known what my problem was not my internet provider tech person. I needed to call LInksys and have them update the firmware for the rotor. It was a "g" rotor over 6 years old. I did not know that your internet can be effected by the capabilities of the rotor. My husband will not touch a computer and continued to use our land line for long distance.
I only hope we live long enough to get our investment back in long distance savings.LOL
But for whatever reason it would not even recognize any networks in my area. While entering in the settings for a secure network you cannot store your settings unless it connects. After it connects it will automatically remember your settings. But if I do a search with my laptop I find 5 in my area. So I guess the WIFI was not working on this phone, anyhow it's on the way back.
Had purchased the phone for my mother so that she can talk to her children freely. However the calls keep disconnecting and it has been of no use to her. The phone does not work unless you are really close to the wireless router
